Nestled on Sanciangko Street in Barangay Kalubihan, Cebu City, Team Zapata Gym resonates with the sounds of intense training—the disciplined breathing, swift footwork, and the sharp crack of kicks that define its unique martial art. Established in 2019 by Grand Master Emiliano "Dodong Zapata" Dacuyan, a venerable figure in Filipino martial arts, the gym serves as a stronghold for the Yaw-Yan style, also known as Sayaw ng Kamatayan or the "Dance of Death."

Yaw-Yan, originated by Napoleon "Master Nap" Fernandez in 1972, integrates elements from Jeet Kune Do, Karate, Eskrima, Aikido, and Judo, creating a distinct combat system tailored to Filipino practitioners. At 61 years old, Dacuyan remains a living embodiment of dedication and resilience. His own martial journey began at 14 in Manila, eventually culminating in a remarkable career as a five-division kickboxing champion spanning from flyweight to lightweight classes.

Today, Dacuyan’s focus extends beyond his personal accolades. He dedicates his efforts to mentoring young fighters, some as young as six, not merely teaching them physical techniques but instilling the core values of discipline, respect, and responsibility. "Our goal is to develop not just fighters, but well-rounded individuals who can think critically and grow through the art," he explains.

Several of his trainees are already making headway toward representing Cebu in prestigious national events such as the Batang Pinoy 2025. For these youth, Yaw-Yan transcends sport, serving as a transformative journey that builds character and perseverance.

Beyond the gym, Dacuyan’s life reflects the principles he imparts. He has also served as a close-in security personnel for VIPs, a role that demanded the same vigilance and discipline he reinforces in his students.

In an era filled with distractions and fleeting shortcuts, Team Zapata Gym stands as a testament to the power of hard work, perseverance, and cultural heritage. Through the rhythmic intensity of Yaw-Yan, Dacuyan continues to forge the champions of tomorrow.
