MANILA – Over 61,000 Filipinos participated in nationwide protests on Sunday, September 21, to condemn corruption and observe the 53rd anniversary of Martial Law. Despite some isolated disturbances, police described the overall demonstrations as largely peaceful.

Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. reported that approximately 50,000 police personnel were deployed to maintain order, including nearly 30,000 in Metro Manila alone.

"Our police units worked diligently to ensure the safety of everyone involved," Nartatez stated. "Although there were isolated incidents, such as the torching of a trailer truck near Ayala Bridge by a small group of unruly protesters, the majority of rallies proceeded peacefully thanks to the cooperation of participants."

By early evening, police recorded an estimated 61,605 protesters nationwide, with around 33,700 gathering in the capital city and thousands more participating in other regions.

Authorities confirmed scattered instances of unrest, including stone-throwing and the arson of a truck near Ayala Bridge, but stressed that restraint was exercised to prevent escalation.

"We extend our gratitude to the organizers and demonstrators who complied with regulations," said PNP Spokesperson Police Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño. "Our officers displayed commendable bravery today, and we deeply appreciate their commitment to public safety."

The coordinated protests not only commemorated the somber anniversary of Martial Law but also served as a platform to voice public anger over alleged irregularities in flood control projects and various corruption issues.
