UST Dominates La Salle in UAAP Season 88 Women’s Basketbal Opener with Onianwa Leading the Charge

University of Santo Tomas delivered a resounding statement in the UAAP Season 88 women’s basketball opener by crushing De La Salle University, 105-56, on Saturday night. Oma Onianwa spearheaded the Growling Tigresses with a remarkable debut, scoring 15 points and grabbing 19 rebounds, while also contributing three assists, three steals, and a block.
The victory also marked an emotional farewell season for seniors Eka Soriano and Kent Pastrana.
UST head coach Haydee Ong reflected on the team’s performance, saying, "I just told the girls that what we did in our preseason and the preparations we made, we wanted to bring our best, especially defensively. There were some miscommunications and areas we need to improve on, so we hope to refine those before facing NU on Wednesday."
UST established dominance early, building a 28-point lead by halftime at 56-28, largely thanks to Onianwa’s 11-point and 15-rebound first-half display. The Growling Tigresses extended their advantage in the third quarter, pushing the gap to 80-45 and securing a decisive win.
Expressing her excitement, Onianwa said, "I’m grateful for the opportunity. It’s so exciting and a blessing to be part of this team and to open the season with such a big victory."
Other notable contributors for UST included Jaja Pescador with 12 points and seven assists, Pastrana with a double-double of 11 points and 11 assists alongside four steals, Brigette Santos with 11 points, six assists, and two steals, and Karylle Sierba adding 10 points and three steals.
La Salle, on the other hand, struggled to find rhythm following the departure of key players Lee Sario, Luisa San Juan, and Bernice Paraiso. Tricia Mendoza led the Lady Archers with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Kyla Sunda contributed 11 points.
Looking ahead, UST prepares for a finals rematch against National University on Wednesday, October 1, at the Quadricentennial Pavilion. La Salle aims to rebound in their next game against Far Eastern University.
