Zamboanga City Sees 7% Drop in Dengue Cases Amid Ongoing Health Concerns
Crispin Abella
Zamboanga City has experienced a seven percent reduction in dengue cases from January 1 to September 13, 2025, though the disease continues to pose a significant public health threat. According to Dr. Dulce Miravite, the city health officer, a total of 1,135 dengue cases were recorded during this period, compared to higher numbers in the same timeframe last year.
Children between the ages of one and ten remain the most susceptible group, representing 54 percent or 608 of the reported cases. Clinical assessments indicated that 29 percent of patients showed no warning signs, while 67 percent exhibited symptoms warranting caution.
Of particular concern, three percent of cases (38 individuals) progressed to severe dengue, highlighting the urgency of early diagnosis and prompt medical intervention. Dr. Miravite urged residents to maintain vigilance and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms arise to help reduce further infections and prevent fatalities.
Among the city’s 98 villages, San Roque reported the highest number of dengue cases at 62, followed by Tumaga with 34 cases ranking tenth in the city’s list of affected areas. Despite the decline in cases, dengue remains a pressing health challenge for Zamboanga City residents.
