Italy Advances to 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship Final with Victory Over Poland

Macario Yambao

Italy confirmed its dominance over Poland once again in the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship semifinals, securing a 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 victory at the MOA Arena on Saturday. The Italian squad, champions of the previous tournament after defeating Poland, has now booked their place in the final where they will face a dynamic Bulgarian team led by the brothers Alex and Moni Nikolov.

Left-handed opposite hitter Yuri Romano was instrumental in the win, contributing 15 points through a combination of 12 attacks, two blocks, and one ace. Alessandro Michieletto added 12 points, playing a pivotal role in keeping Italy’s championship hopes alive.

Despite an early deficit in the third set, with Poland’s Wilfredo Leon blocking Romano and putting Poland ahead 7-3, Italy managed to rally back. Jakub Kochanowski extended Poland’s lead to 14-9. However, Italy gradually reduced the gap and tied the set at 18-all, sparked by a service ace from Michieletto.

A costly error from Poland during a prolonged rally handed Italy a crucial 23-21 advantage. Michieletto then sealed the match by scoring the final two points, completing the sweep and sending Italy directly to the championship round.

Poland now shifts its focus to the third-place match against Czechia, aiming to secure a podium finish in the tournament.

Looking ahead, Italy will confront Bulgaria’s young and ascending team in the finals, aiming to defend their world title.
