Visayan Electric Raises Electricity Rates Amid Supply Challenges

Nemesio Gatdula

Visayan Electric is set to raise its electricity rate to P12.51 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) from September through October, marking an increase of P0.92 compared to the previous month. This adjustment is primarily driven by elevated prices in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), triggered by the malfunctioning of several power plants and the issuance of yellow alerts by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in August.

Mark Kindica, President and General Manager of Visayan Electric, urged consumers to practice energy conservation to avoid higher electricity bills. "We encourage our customers to use electricity wisely to manage their expenses amid this rate increase," he stated.

In addition, Visayan Electric contractors conducted inspections of electric meters along D. Jakosalem Street in Cebu City on September 16, 2025, as part of routine maintenance and monitoring activities.

These developments reflect ongoing efforts to address supply constraints while maintaining reliable service for customers in the Visayas region.
